Constructing Modern Knowledge 2010, a minds-on institute for educators, has confirmed Dr. Derrick Pitts, Chief Astronomer and Planetarium Director at Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute!

Dr. Pitts joins our interstellar faculty and intergalactic guest speakers, Jonathan Kozol, Dr. Lella Gandini and Professor Mitchel Resnick.

About Derrick Pitts
Dr. Pitts has been named as one of the 50 most important African-Americans in research science and is the president of the Philadelphia chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc .

“Pitts, the region’s foremost astronomy authority, has been a vital component to the Franklin Institute for over two decades. After joining the Institute in 1978 as a museum educator, Pitts advanced to his position as chief astronomer and planetarium director in 1990. In 2002, he oversaw the renovation of the Fels Planetarium and was integrally involved in the design of ‘Space Command,’ the Institute’s new astronomy exhibit. Pitts twice modernized and redesigned the Institute’s observatory.

Dr. Pitts has made numerous television appearances on shows such as The Colbert Report and Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Countdown with Keith Olbermann, The Today Show, CBS Morning News and Good Morning America. He co-hosts a weekly radio discussion program, Skytalk.
